Noritsu V30 vs V50 vs Fuji SP: How Minilab Film Developing Machines Work
We get asked constantly how film gets developed at scale in a real lab. Not a home tank, an actual minilab. So we filmed a full walkthrough of our Noritsu machines and explained how they compare to the Fuji SP system we used to run. Full video below, key specs and breakdown in text form here.
Home Tank vs. JOBO vs. Minilab: What's the Difference
A basic developing tank runs about €30 and gets you manual black-and-white or color development at home. Step up to a JOBO rotary system and you're at €50-60 for tanks, with machines starting around €450 secondhand. Both require manual labor, loading reels in the dark, timing rotations by hand, drying separately. At lab volume, this becomes the bottleneck. It's also why consistent temperature control (minilab chemistry needs to stay within a fraction of a degree) is hard to replicate at home.

Fuji SP vs. Noritsu: Why We Switched
We ran a Fuji SP minilab system for years before moving fully to Noritsu. The deciding factor was mechanical, not image quality: Fuji's system runs on a rubber drive belt that's a specific, increasingly hard-to-source part. When ours broke, we had no backup and lost three weeks of turnaround waiting on a replacement. Noritsu uses gears instead of a belt. It's easier to source, and replaceable with 3D-printed parts if needed. That reliability, more than speed, is why we run Noritsu as our primary system now.

Noritsu V30 vs V50 Specs
- Noritsu V30: develops 30 rolls of 24-exposure film per hour, or 20 rolls of 36 exposure.
- Noritsu V50: our main machine, develops 50 rolls of 24-exposure film per hour, or 33.3 rolls of 36 exposure.
Both are dry-to-dry systems, film comes out fully dry in about 10 minutes, compared to the 20-30 minutes of separate hand-drying time needed after a manual tank development.

Chemistry and Replenishment
Minilab development runs through four core chemicals. Developer, bleach, fix, and stabilizer, each held at precise temperature (within about a degree) with a continuous replenishment system: fresh chemical pumped in per roll, exhausted chemical pumped out to waste. We run Fuji chemistry for developer and bleach, and Calbo (a German manufacturer) for fix, due to recent supply issues with Fuji's fixer.

Waste Chemical Disposal
One of the least talked-about costs of running a lab: waste chemical disposal isn't free. Spent developer, bleach, and fix have to be collected and removed by a certified handler, and it's a real factor in what labs charge for developing.
